Don't Dare To Pay In This Country - Deep Inside Baghdad's Second-Hand Market, Iraq 🇮🇶
Iraq, a country with a rich history and significant cultural heritage, has faced numerous challenges in recent decades, particularly related to conflict and instability. The aftermath of the 2003 invasion by the United States and its allies led to significant upheaval, resulting in a prolonged period of violence, sectarian strife, and the rise of militant groups. In the years following the invasion, Iraq dealt with the emergence of sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia factions, along with the resurgence of extremist groups, notably ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). The rise of ISIS in 2014 marked a critical point in the country’s struggles, as the group seized large territories, declaring a caliphate and implementing harsh rule over the regions they controlled. This period was marked by severe human rights abuses, displacement of millions, and extensive battles to reclaim territory from ISIS. The Iraqi government, with support from international coalitions, launched military operations to defeat ISIS, culminating in the significant loss of its territorial claims by late 2017. Although the military defeat of ISIS was a significant achievement, the underlying issues contributing to Iraq's instability remained unaddressed. In recent years, Iraq has continued to face challenges, including economic hardships, social unrest, and ongoing political tensions. Protests erupted in late 2019, primarily driven by widespread corruption, lack of basic services, and high unemployment rates. These protests, fueled by public dissatisfaction with the government, have at times been met with violent crackdowns. Furthermore, the influence of foreign powers, especially Iran and the United States, continues to complicate Iraq's political landscape. The presence of foreign troops and the influence of militia groups have sparked debates about sovereignty and national identity. As Iraq moves forward, it grapples with the dual challenge of rebuilding and reconciling its communities while addressing the complex security and political issues that persist. The focus on fostering national unity, economic recovery, and stability remains crucial for the nation's future. ________________________________________ Quit my corporate job in September 2021 to chase new destinations and document my life.
