Quebec is a Continental Clean Energy Superpower

Québec stands as one of the world’s largest hydropower producers, operating 62 generating stations supported by 681 dams and 28 massive reservoirs with over 177 TWh of storage capacity—more than enough to power the entire state of New York for a full year. For decades, this renewable powerhouse has served as a giant “green battery” for northeastern North America, supplying clean energy to millions of homes across Québec, Ontario, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. In May 2026, New York City became the latest jurisdiction to tap into Québec’s hydropower. The newly completed Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) transmission line is now delivering up to 1,250 MW of clean Québec hydropower directly into the heart of New York City, meeting roughly 20% of the city’s electricity needs, powering about 2.5 million people. Featuring the longest buried transmission line in North America, running from Montreal to New York City beneath Lake Champlain and the Hudson River, the 25-year contract is expected to generate more than $30 billion in revenue for Hydro-Québec while reducing New York’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons.
