Mitosis (UPDATED 2026)
Join the Amoeba Sisters as they define mitosis, explain its significance, and then dive into general events of the major phases of mitosis: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. This video also mentions concepts including interphase, chromosome/chromatid, cytokinesis, and how uncontrolled cell division can be a feature of cancer cells. We mention at 8:05 that diagrams and illustrations can't always show everything. We already mention one in our video about how not all chromosomes tend to be shown. But there can be more misconceptions that come from diagrams and illustrations. Here are a few more examples: 1. In illustrations and diagrams, chromosomes often look like easily identifiable structures. But during many times (like interphase), they will not appear that way. 2. A lot of diagrams focus on animal cells. We did (specifically, human cells). But mitosis in plant cells has some differences. For example, no centrioles! 3. Diagrams and illustrations are often in 2D. But it makes it difficult to show some parts of what is actually a 3D process. ----------------------------------------------- The Amoeba Sisters videos demystify science with humor and relevance.
