#TRAKAI - a Gothic castle built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries on one of many islands in Lake Galvė, situated in a strategic location surrounded by water. Interestingly, during the castle's construction, the lake's water level was over 2 meters higher than it is today, and today's single island once consisted of a group of three islets. Construction began during the reign of Grand Duke Kęstutis of Lithuania and was completed by his son Vytautas, who modified the original design, strengthening and modernizing it. This resulted in a new Gothic brick castle that combined defensive and residential functions. In 1409, Vytautas the Great moved the capital of the country here. It was here that the Lithuanian Metrics and the state treasury were kept. The stone castle, finished in red brick, served as the princes' residence and a center of cultural life for many years. Vytautas died there on October 27, 1430. Trakai Island Castle consists of simple, unadorned structures that reflect the most advanced fortification ideas of the 15th century. Often called a treasure trove of medieval defensive architecture, it was the only water castle in Eastern Europe. All the princes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania resided in this island castle. Only Sigismund Augustus broke with tradition and moved to Vilnius Castle, located at the foot of Gediminas Hill. The Karaites are an ethnic and religious group that settled in Lithuania, primarily in Trakai, in the 14th century by Grand Duke Vytautas. They were brought from Crimea to serve as castle guardians. Karaites are followers of Karaite Judaism, a religion based on the Old Testament and a branch of Judaism. Their traditional three-window houses and a kenesa (synagogue) remain preserved in Trakai to this day.
