Ezequiel Marcos Ferreira, who spent five days lost in a forest in northern Santa Catarina, recalled the moments of despair he experienced while attempting to complete a trail on Morro Pelado, in the Joinville region. The route, which should have taken about seven hours, turned into more than 140 hours of survival amidst dense forest, heavy rain, and difficult terrain. "If it weren't for God... By the third day I would have been dead," he stated. Considered one of the most complex search operations in the region, the action mobilized more than 60 professionals, including firefighters and volunteers. According to rescuers, the chances of finding the hiker alive decreased each day. Morro Pelado, with an altitude of over a thousand meters, has difficult trails, many forks, and climbing sections, factors that increase the risk for inexperienced people. Ezequiel was hiking alone and gave up trying to reach the summit due to the fog. During his return, he realized he had taken a different path. With his cell phone battery dead, little food, and no idea of ​​his location, he began following the course of a river, facing waterfalls, intense cold, and even encounters with wild animals. At night, he tried to sleep in makeshift shelters in the forest, but frequently woke up because of the cold. After walking about 30 kilometers, the hiker found a water treatment station where he received help. The news was celebrated by the rescue teams, who were still in the forest. Recovering, Ezequiel acknowledges that he made a mistake in undertaking the adventure alone and affirms that he will continue hiking, but with more caution.
