India accounts for 27% of world cervical cancer deaths every year. Growing up in a family of doctors, health was always a priority. But growing up in a country that still has deep pockets of poverty, every day was a stark reminder that there is great inequity in the ability to access care. I am not yet a doctor but I am not voiceless. And this voice and the desire to use it to make a difference in the world around me drove me to start Project Shakti, which aims to address an issue faced by millions of women in India - the lack of access to safe and affordable menstrual hygiene management. The taboo that surrounds menstruation in our culture means that generations of girls in lower income settings in particular use outdated and unsanitary solutions. In addition to the health risks that this imposes, the lack of awareness, communication and solutions means that girls are victims of ostracism, shame and in many cases are made to discontinue their education, which eliminates their opportunities in life and leaves them at the mercy of a masochistic community. As a young woman, an aspiring doctor and a voice for greater agency of women in our generation, this is unacceptable to me, especially when solutions are easily available.
