Advanced ‘In-Sleeper Point Machine’ Technology Set to Transform Railway Safety and Efficiency

Khaitan explained that the newly introduced “In-Sleeper Point Machine” is a major upgrade over conventional systems used in Indian Railways. Unlike traditional point machines—where critical components are installed above the sleeper and require dismantling during maintenance—this advanced system integrates all mechanisms within the sleeper itself. This eliminates the need for disassembly during tamping operations, significantly reducing maintenance time and operational disruptions. The technology, developed by UK-based Hydraulic Technologies England Ltd and widely used by Network Rail, has been tested in Europe for over 15–20 years. It supports train speeds up to 200–225 km/h, aligning with India’s push for high-speed rail. With enhanced reliability, reduced friction through roller slide chair systems, and improved safety standards, this innovation is currently under trial and is expected to be deployed in the field by April 2026. Indian Railways may adopt it on a larger scale following successful performance evaluation.
