Mahler/Gryaznov - Adagietto from Symphony No. 5 (for the left hand)
Probably Mahler's most famous composition, arranged for left hand. Intended to be a love letter to his wife Alma, this piece became a popular hit with audiences and is often performed standalone, including once at Robert Kennedy's funeral. It was also featured in the 1971 film Death in Venice. Since this movement was scored only for the strings and harp, the arranger's idea was to similarly limit the pianist's options. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about the idea of translating such a grand orchestral piece into one hand, and if I’m honest, I still think there are a few spots where the piano writing could be improved still with fuller textures. However, on the whole I feel the arrangement is quite an effective distillation of the core emotional content of the piece. I’m particularly impressed by the coda, which is about as awe-inspiring as you could ever hope to hear from a single hand. Buy the score here: https://gryaznoff.com/works/published...
