Reviewing Djibril Diop Mambéty's masterpiece, Touki Bouki

In 1973 the Senegalese film maker, Djibril Diop Mambéty directed Touki Bouki, a film that would later become recognised as his masterpiece. West African cinema at this point was dominated by the figure of Ousmane Sembène, who many have referred to as the father of modern African cinema. There were other directors too at the time, like Safi Faye, who’s ethnographical approach to film and rural pastoral life bestowed her the title of mother of African cinema. And Mambéty’s Touki Bouki brings the best of both directors into one film. On one hand we have Sembene’s sensitivity to colonial imposition on culture and on the other we have the richness of grounded rural life. Mambéty’s raw and visceral language of film making takes the idea of cinema and storytelling to another level. Mixed in this bubbling pot of African urban and rural life, are the masked dreams of reaching the streets of Paris as envisioned through the life of two lovers.
