Losing their religion: How some young Turks are turning their backs on Islam

“Turkey, with a 99 percent Muslim population...” That phrase has been in use for quite a while when one wanted to talk about Turkey. The conservative government boasts with the figure. But is that a fact? When one is born in Turkey unless they are from a Christian or a Jewish family Islam is mentioned as their religion on their ID cards. Atheism is considered to be by and large an alien concept. But recently, reports emerge alleging that there is increasing interest in atheism and that the conservative youth is losing its faith in religion.
