FORGOTTEN | Shocking images are emerging from the emergency caused by the rains in the Peruvian jungle. In regions like San Martín and Junín, mudslides, overflowing rivers, and intense rainfall are severely impacting the population. Local authorities are requesting urgent government support to assist those affected. In Pichanaqui, Chanchamayo province, a mudslide triggered by the heavy rains left dozens of families without drinking water, also increasing the risk of dengue outbreaks due to stagnant water and the proliferation of mosquitoes. Residents warn that the situation could worsen if immediate cleanup and prevention efforts are not undertaken. The emergency is also being experienced with dramatic severity in the San Martín region. In the district of Shamboyacu, Picota province, an engineer with the Juntos social program, identified as Juan Jaramillo, nearly lost his life after being swept away by the Ayuman ravine, which was swollen by torrential rain. The professional attempted to cross the ravine on his motorcycle when he was caught off guard by the violent current. Amid the chaos, he miraculously survived by clinging to ropes and branches as he was swept several meters by the water. Witnesses reported that he lost consciousness and was rescued thanks to the quick reaction of women and neighbors who rushed to his aid after hearing his cries for help. Following the rescue, the residents made an urgent appeal to the authorities, demanding the construction of a bridge to allow safe passage during the rainy season and prevent future tragedies.
