What is the main verb in English? A main verb, also known as a principal verb, is the head verb or the most important verb in a sentence that can stand alone or be used with a helping verb, also called an auxiliary verb. It shows the action performed by the subject or the state of being the subject is in. There are two types of main verbs in English: Action verbs Linking verbs Action verbs An action verb is a verb (main verb) that expresses an action: dynamic or mental. It can stand alone or be used with a helping verb. These verbs will show a physical action performed by the subject of a sentence. Ex - go, play, write, run, beat, slap, kiss, sit, dance, teach, eat, cook, chop, cut, ride, hold, bend, jump, push, sleep, etc. Examples: Ron teaches Mathematics to school kids. I meditate every day. He slapped him in front of me. Riya took the book from my table. She kissed me multiple times that day. Some action verbs don’t show a physical action; they show a mental, emotional, sensory state of being of the subject. Understand, believe, agree, love, hate, need, own, etc. Examples:- I understand your problem. Nobody believes what you are saying. We need something to eat. My students love me so much. I have an amazing group of people that supports me. Note: stative verbs are not used in progressive forms. Types of action verbs Action verbs are categorized into two types: Transitive verbs Intransitive verbs Transitive verbs Verbs that are acted upon an object are called transitive verbs. These verbs are followed by an object. Example: eat, teach, slap, kick, learn, love, hate, drink, cook, chop, cut, push, beat, lift, share, enjoy, etc. Examples:- I am eating some vegetables. We are learning mathematics. Jon slapped the manager of the club last night. Riya is drinking coffee right now. I love my students. Note: Ask WHAT or WHOM to the verb to find out the direct object. The answer of WHAT is always a thing, and the answer of WHOM is always a person. She gave me some chocolates. My father gifted me a phone on my last birthday. Ditransitive verbs: these are verbs that have both a direct and an indirect object. Intransitive verbs Verbs that are not followed by an object or can’t be acted upon something or somebody are called intransitive verbs. Ex - sleep, laugh, yawn, jump, smile, cry, shout, vent, stand, sit, etc. Examples: They are sleeping in the hall. Everyone laughs at him when he speaks. You can sit on my table. Why is he crying so loudly? 2. Linking verbs A linking verb is a verb that links the subjects to a word or a group of words (subject complement) that gives information about the subject. It is followed by a noun or an adjective. To be: is, am, are, was, were, is being, am being, are being, was being, being, has been, have been, had been, should be, must be, can be, could be, may be, might be, would be, shall be, will be, should have been, etc. Others: seem, look, stay, feel, become, sound, etc. Examples:- I am a teacher. You will be an awesome father. She was my best friend. You look awesome right now. He stayed calm in that situation. You seem unhappy with my performance. Note: some verbs can act as both action verbs and linking verbs. Examples: You are looking in the wrong direction. (action verb) You look worried. (linking verb) Monu stays with me. (action) You stay calm. (linking verb) Why are you smelling me? (action verb) You smell so good. (linking verb) Watch the lesson until the end to master all the things taught.
