Designers Guild Autumn/Winter 2023
Welcome to a new Autumn Winter season that is infused with the ground-breaking energy and creative spirit of the extraordinary Fauves movement. In October 1905, a handful of artists; Matisse, Derain, Dufy and de Vlaminck among them, presented their work at the ‘Salon d’Automne’ in Paris and duly caused an uproar. Vividly coloured and with direct and often ferocious brushstrokes, their work caused a sensation and the prestigious art critic Louis Vauxcelles declared the group – wild beasts or “Les Fauves.” Signifying a break from impressionism and with a leap towards the abstract, a new modernity entered the art world with Matisse as its master – a vibrant and inventive mood ensued with colour, texture and pattern expressing the artists emotions with a sharp directness. Our printed fabric and wallpaper collections this season draw their essence from this extraordinary movement – with a lively, spirited brush stroke and a vibrant palette that evokes the joy and energy of these artists and create interiors that are joyful, elegant, serene and infused with artistry.
