Living with Zen Master Shinzan: Stories of Compassion & Openness ~ with Matt Shinkai Kane Roshi

In this heartfelt and moving talk, Shinkai Kane Roshi shares his personal journey to become a monk at Gyokuryuji temple in Japan under the guidance of Zen Master Shinzan. Through intimate, humorous and candid stories, Shinkai paints a vivid portrait of a master whose practice wasn't confined to the meditation hall, but was vigorous and alive - whether gardening, feeding his dogs or engaging with society. Central to Shinkai’s reflections is Shinzan's incredible openness and boundless compassion to all that arrived on the temple doorstep. Gyokuryuji became a sanctuary for everyone - young and old, outcasts and those struggling on the fringes of society. Shinkai describes how Shinzan met every person and every situation head-on with absolute transparency, teaching his students the true meaning of 'nari kiru' - to completely become and engage 100% with whatever life puts in front of you. The talk begins with an introduction by sangha member Chris Owen, who shares the story of how a direct command from Shinzan Roshi miraculously led to the founding of the Camberwell dojo in London for Daizan Roshi and Zenways. -- Zenways promotes and encourages activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing, balance and awakening (satori or kensho - the enlightenment of Zen) in the many different situations we find ourselves in. Over many years of strict training, in Japan and the west, Julian Daizan Skinner received dharma transmission and permission to teach in both Rinzai and Soto traditions of Zen. He now teaches at the Yugagyo Dojo in London, UK. May these recordings help you and those around you to find and realise the truth. www.zenways.org #zen #shinkairoshi #shinzanroshi
