History and Present of Kolejowa Street in Warsaw 1. Beginnings (before 1875) Kolejowa Street was created shortly before 1875 as an embankment road connected with the Lubomirski Ramparts. The city embankments were moved a bit westward to include railway infrastructure and the tracks of the Warsaw–Vienna Freight Station. The street originally bore the name Zaokopowa because it ran along the former city ramparts. 2. Industrial growth and early 20th century (≈1875–1939) Warehouses for the railway started appearing along the street: from about 1896, storage halls were built (for example at numbers 8/10). Metalworking developed: Bańkowski’s boiler-making workshops, later the “Borman and Szwede” plant; an electrical engineering factory “Bracia Borkowscy” operated from 1907 to 1911. In 1920 a large production hall of the Warsaw Joint-Stock Company for Locomotive Construction (later the Locomotive Works) was built. In the interwar period there were also a metal foundry, a tool factory, yeast plants, and coal depots – the street had a strongly industrial character. 3. War and immediate aftermath (1939–1950s) In 1939, during the bombings, Kolejowa Street did not suffer major destruction; the losses were moderate. During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, damage particularly affected the Tram Power Plant and the Locomotive Works. After the war the locomotive works were nationalized and transformed into the Warsaw Construction Machinery Plant named after Ludwik Waryński (Bumar-Waryński). 4. Post-war changes and transformations (1950s–1980s) After reconstruction and administrative changes, part of the street was completely absorbed by the Bumar-Waryński industrial plant. The end section near the power plant ceased to exist, cut off by the extension of Marcin Kasprzak Street. Until the 1980s a fragment of the street survived inside the plant grounds, but the street as a whole no longer functioned in its original form. 5. Today Today Kolejowa Street lies in the Czyste neighborhood of the Wola district. It is about 1240 meters long, running from the junction with Sławińska Street to Towarowa Street. On the even-numbered (right) side there is a complex of railway and warehouse buildings built as storage halls in the late 19th and early 20th century. The street is not typically residential; aside from a few housing buildings, industrial, warehouse, and office uses dominate. 6. Recognition and Location Kolejowa Street is located in the Czyste neighborhood in the Wola district of Warsaw. The name “Kolejowa” was adopted in 1901; previously the street was called Zaokopowa.
