Do Dark Frames Actually Help? I Tested It So You Don't Have To
Same camera. Same target. Same night. 371 frames — one stack with dark frames, one without. The result surprised me. Most astrophotographers will tell you dark frames are essential. Full stop. But here's the thing — with a modern cooled camera and the right stacking workflow, that advice might be wrong. In this video I run a controlled test. ZWO ASI533MC Pro cooled to 0°C. 371 light frames of M27. 30 matched dark frames. Four processing stages, side by side, every single variable locked except one: darks. Stage 1 — Raw stack Stage 2 — Background extraction Stage 3 — Colour calibration Stage 4 — Fully processed Here's where it gets interesting. The no-darks stack was equal or better at every single stage. And I'll show you exactly why. Now here's the practical advice: if you're using a modern cooled astro camera and you're dithering with Winsorized Sigma Clipping during stacking, you can probably skip dark frames entirely. That's the practical takeaway. If you're on an uncooled DSLR — different story. 🔭 EQUIPMENT USED: • Camera: ZWO ASI533MC Pro (cooled to 0°C) • Processing: Siril, GraXpert, PixInsight • 371 × 60s light frames • 30 × 60s matched dark frames 📖 FREE GUIDES: → https://astroimagery.com/getcheatsheet 🛒 SHOP: → https://shop.astroimagery.com ☕ SUPPORT: → https://buymeacoffee.com/astroimagery 🎥 RELATED VIDEOS: Blurry Astrophotos?
