In this course, we will learn the amazing story of the discovery of a vast collection of scrolls and books from the Second Temple period, found in the Qumran caves overlooking the Dead Sea, a discovery that was a global sensation! We will visit the scroll site near the Dead Sea, and learn about the phenomenon of sectarianism during the Second Temple period. Some of the scrolls found describe the life of a solitary community, its regulations, laws, and customs, while other scrolls describe the books of the Bible and other holy scriptures as they existed at that time, as well as writings of prayer, halakha, poetry, and magic. This is a rare opportunity to learn about the cultural and religious life of Jews in the last centuries of the Second Temple period, and to learn that many concepts of classical Judaism (which were later formalized by the Sages) were controversial or in the process of being formalized during the Second Temple period: determining the collection of the Holy Scriptures, biblical interpretation, prayer, halakha, and more. The scrolls are also an important source for understanding what books looked like at that time, and how scribes and copyists operated. Due to the nature of the Qumran Scrolls, and because of their importance to Jews and Christians, research using various technological tools has also developed around them: material research of the scrolls and the Qumran site, and a variety of computer tools around the text of the scrolls and their photographs, which allow a technological perspective on the scrolls alongside literary study.
