What kind of trip are you planning? ☐ Incheon International Airport, Connecting the Skies of 54 Countries Incheon International Airport connects Korea to 164 cities in 54 countries. Since its opening in 2001, an average of 80,000 people pass through it daily, representing eight out of ten Koreans entering and leaving the country. From overseas adoptees who came to Korea last year to spend the holidays with their biological parents, to a 90-year-old mother who embarked on a 12-hour flight in a wheelchair to see her immigrant children. People with diverse stories pass through Incheon International Airport to begin their journeys. International airports aren't just filled with international travelers. From overseas industrial trainees seeking employment in Korea, to Southeast Asian women marrying Koreans, to immigrants seeking new homes, airports are also a gateway for those experiencing life's turning points. The Incheon International Airport passenger terminal, a vast 500,000 square meters—60 times the size of a soccer field—is a sight to behold. What stories lie hidden within? ☐ Discovered at the Airport: Today in 2008 The airport is teeming with excited travelers. However, a closer look at the arrival and departure hall reveals a glimpse into the times. With the high exchange rate making overseas travel intimidating, the number of arrivals and departures at Incheon International Airport has decreased by approximately 3.3% compared to last year. Conversely, the strong yen has led to an increase in the number of Japanese travelers to Korea via Incheon International Airport. As such, airports are sensitive to the global economy. They also serve as a mirror reflecting the state of Korean society today. Early international students returning home for vacation, solo travelers well past marriageable age on a "goblin" trip, Korean Chinese temporarily leaving Korea to extend their work visas, and fathers who spend their meager savings to see their children. Looking at the airport, we see the face of our times. What kind of era are we living in? ☐ People passing through the "airport," the gateway to life ▶ 1st floor arrivals hall - A "Korean" husband waiting for his "Chinese" wife, their second meeting "I visited over ten marriage agencies to arrange my younger sister's marriage. After many twists and turns, my sister-in-law is coming today." A man in his forties strolls through the arrivals hall early in the morning, holding a bouquet of flowers. Two men follow him like shadows. The three men are waiting for a newlywed from Shenyang, China, coming to Korea. The groom, over forty, has found a spouse abroad, and his older brother and a marriage agency employee have accompanied him. Today marks their second meeting since their midsummer wedding in China. His wife, who had been waiting at the arrivals hall, appeared, but the husband, holding flowers, was reluctant to approach. A groom who had traveled the path of time to tie the knot, a bride who had traveled the sky. Will they be able to transcend their 13-year age gap, nationality, and worldly prejudices and settle down as a married couple on this earth? ▶ 3rd Floor Departure Hall - A father leaving for the Middle East for work at the age of 60 and his strong supporters "This is my first time at the airport to send my father off. So, for me, the airport is a place of sadness." The airport terminal is filled with the excitement of meeting and the sadness of parting. A relay of greetings follows, as the sixty-year-old father boards his plane in a few minutes. Returning to work in Iran after his first vacation in his homeland, he is joined by his wife, three daughters, and grandchildren, all living in Yeosu. The entire family is present. A father who has taken on a difficult challenge at the age of retirement, his three daughters, who understand his heart, are his strongest supporters. This is the first time he has visited the airport to send his father off abroad. For them, the airport is a passageway of separation, a space of sorrow. Next spring, as they pick up their father for his second vacation, the airport will become a passageway of reunion, a space of joy for this family. ▶ 3rd Floor Immigration Office - A Lonely Vacation for a Korean-Chinese Head of Household "I'm leaving with less than 2 million won in salary.
