One day, he unexpectedly gets the chance to travel to Italy to bring Dickie Greenleaf, the son of a wealthy factory owner, back to America. The father, who believes Ripley to be an old friend of Dickie's, is willing to pay for the trip and all expenses. In Mongibello, a small town near Naples, he finds Dickie living there with his girlfriend, Marge. Ripley and Greenleaf are initially very frosty, as Dickie has no intention of returning to America. When Ripley makes it clear that he wouldn't mind spending his father's money with Dickie, the two become friends. Much to Marge's dismay, she now feels neglected. The friendship between the two young men grows ever closer, and Marge gives Dickie an ultimatum: either her or Tom. Dickie can't quite make up his mind, and his relationship with Tom deteriorates. On a trip together, which is meant to be their last after Dickie finally chooses Marge, Tom murders his friend. Ripley now begins to orchestrate an elaborate double game. He assumes the identity of Dickie Greenleaf, rents an apartment in Rome under his name, and forges Dickie's checks. He has finally escaped his old, hated life and has enough money to live entirely on his own terms. Then one day, Freddie Miles, an old friend of Dickie's, appears and becomes suspicious. Part 2: After Ripley "had to" kill Freddie Miles as well, the net slowly closes around his machinations. The police become suspicious and want to question him. While traveling in northern Italy as Ripley to establish an alibi, Ripley, alias Greenleaf, turns himself in to Officer Roverini, the investigating officer of the Roman police, in Rome. Finally, Dickie's father announces his arrival from the United States. Living in a posh palazzo in Venice with a private detective, Ripley sees no other option but to take the offensive. He resolutely confronts his pursuers, including Marge and Roverini, who have also traveled to Venice. The more perilous the situation becomes for Ripley, the more recklessly and dangerously he plays his game – and as if rewarded for his daring, it seems to be working. Then Marge discovers Dickie's rings in Tom's bathroom...
