BOOK BREAKS: Annette Gordon-Reed on ""The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family"

"The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family" (‪@WWNorton‬) "The Hemingses of Monticello" tells the story of the Hemings family, whose close blood ties to our third president had been systematically expunged from American history until very recently, and follows them from their origins in Virginia in the 1700s to the family's dispersal after Jefferson's death in 1826. This epic work was named one of the best books of the year by the Washington Post, Time, the Los Angeles Times, Amazon, and the San Francisco Chronicle, and a notable book by the New York Times. Annette Gordon-Reed is the Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School and a Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. Gordon-Reed has won sixteen book prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 and the National Book Award in 2008, for "The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family" (Norton, 2008).
