In 1988 the British Army decided the FV432 was finished. The sleek new Warrior was arriving, and the old tracked box from 1962 was supposed to quietly disappear. It did not. There were thousands of them. They were paid for. They were reliable. And they could do a hundred jobs the expensive new vehicle was too valuable to waste on. So the green box stayed, and stayed, and stayed. It fought in the Gulf War in 1991. It served through the Bosnian peacekeeping mission in the 1990s. When the IED threat in Iraq began killing soldiers in lighter vehicles, the army did not reach for something new. It reached for the FV432, up-armored it into the Bulldog, and sent it back to war. Then it went to Ukraine in 2022. Nearly three thousand were built, and sixty years after the first one rolled off the line, the vehicle nobody ever loved is still carrying soldiers into combat. The critics measured it against the gun it did not carry. They never measured it against the only thing that mattered, which was how long it would keep doing its job.
