Trip Description: I travel from Maramures, the northernmost region of Romania with its dense ancient forests, through the wild mountains of the Eastern Carpathians, all the way to legendary Transylvania. There, I embrace a good old friend, explore the works of contemporary Romanian artists, learn the true story of Dracula, and climb the heights of the Carpathians' three most beautiful high mountain roads with my Twin. High Mountain Roads in the Carpathians: 1. Transrarau The Transrarau is a high mountain road in the Carpathians, which winds its way up 10 km to the Rarau peak at 1651 m. The road passes white cliffs, centuries-old forests, and magnificent gorges, offering magnificent panoramic views at the top of the pass. 2. Transfagarasan At nearly 100 kilometers, the Transfagarasan winds its way through countless curves through the Fagaras Mountains in the Transylvanian Alps. The pass connects the Romanian regions of Wallachia and Transylvania and, at 2,044 meters, is considered one of the most beautiful high mountain roads in the world. 3. Transalpina The Transalpina is the highest alpine road in Romania. Its highest point is at an altitude of 2,145 meters. It crosses the Transylvanian Alps over a distance of 150 km and connects Gorj County in Little Wallachia with Alba County in Transylvania. Its nickname, the "Royal Road," is well deserved.
