A section of elders from the Karayu Clan of the Borana Community in Isiolo County have strongly rejected the formation of a new governance committee led by a “President,” terming it a violation of their deeply rooted traditional governance system known as the Gadha System. Speaking after a two-day meeting in Kinna, the elders condemned a recent gathering in Merti where a splinter group appointed former Isiolo North MP Charfano Guyo Mokku as President of the community. They argued that the Borana and Karayu clans have never recognized a presidential-style leadership structure. According to the elders, the Borana community is traditionally governed under the Gadha System, led by the Aba Gada—the supreme leader—supported by councils such as Ayyu, Aba Qaye, and Jalabs, with roots tracing back to Ethiopia as part of the larger Oromo community. The elders accused the proponents of the new committee of pushing political agendas aimed at dividing the community ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
