#materialstechnology #design #stefanopasotti Today we're talking about the Grillo Telephone Thanks to its style, the Grillo telephone (designed in 1966 for the Italian company Siemens by Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper) forever revolutionized the look of the telephone. It became a true icon for future generations, and obviously an inspiration for the most important companies of the time. Just to give you an example: I was born in 1986. As a teenager, there were two phones that everyone wanted: the legendary Nokia 3310 and the Motorola StarTac, which closed like a clamshell. That Motorola was obviously inspired by Richard Sapper and Marco Zanuso's design. A necessary note: it recalls the shape of Henry Dreyfuss's 1965 Trimline, in which the phone detaches from a base and can be picked up. But it remains a rigid handset, whereas with the Grillo telephone, the body remains completely connected, and the handset literally opens and closes. When the phone is closed on a flat surface, it resembles a clamshell, revealing no indication of its actual use. When picked up, a snap-on opening activates the receiver and reveals a small dial. For those unfamiliar, the dial is the classic dial found on telephones prior to those with clearly visible buttons. To dial a number, you had to insert your finger into the slot and rotate it until it reached the end. This was done for all numbers. I'd say it was a fairly lengthy operation, but it worked. The telephone cord ended in a molded plastic socket, inside which was located the ringer with its characteristic buzz, which gave the phone its name. This socket was made the same color as the receiver: it was another detail designed for an increasingly demanding audience when it came to stylistic details, and in fact, no one paid attention to that element because it often remained hidden.
