Sublevel 4. Administration wing. Third cycle. You are ADM-0001 at LANTERN's Mass Data Administration. The band header used to say CRACK WIDENS. Tonight it says THE BLEED. The tagline underneath has changed one word and that word is doing a great deal of work: MASS DATA INTEGRITY · LEAK. Cycle status, of course, still reads NOMINAL. Two screens are dark when you sit down and they do not come back. Handler 05 — the flatline you watched hold at 95.7 for two cycles — finally let go; its tile is a grave now, filled to the color the dead tiles are. Handler 14, the phantom that never matched any assignment, simply isn't there anymore. The roster still averages them in at their last good number. The institution keeps counting the dead. And the third one. Handler 10's seat — row three, second column, the same square it has occupied since Cycle 01 — is not dark. It is occupied. Something came up out of it about twenty seconds into the shift: H93, tag MDA-?????, no shift code, an index near half the floor. It is not on any roster you have. It carries an anomaly type the catalog doesn't list. And it climbs — 44.8, 45.5, 46.2 — all night, steady, toward a number it will not quite reach. The dead don't stay where you put them. At intervals you can't predict, their data surfaces inside the living queues: BLEED ← H05. BLEED ← H14. BLEED ← H10. A few seconds of someone else's processing where it should not be, and the system treats it as though it belongs there, and then the tile snaps back to itself before you can be sure. Your eye is pulled, again and again, to the seat that should be empty and isn't. The mean quality index slides — low nineties down toward the mid-eighties — across three hours, never fast enough to catch in the act. There is still no button. This is your shift. Three hours.
