JUST ONE PUMP AND THREE TANKS, HOW TO SOLVE IT? Hey, my electrician friend! Have you ever encountered a situation where your client has only one pump and needs to supply three independent tanks? Well, we encountered this situation and managed to solve it very simply, without using electronics. We developed a control system using three auxiliary contactors, one for each reservoir, and we also used solenoid valves at the inlet of each reservoir. This way, each reservoir float is responsible for monitoring the water level in each reservoir. When each one requests water, the signal will close an auxiliary contactor, the one for each reservoir. This auxiliary contactor will close its NO contacts, with one of them turning on the pump and the other opening the valve. This automation is repeated for the other reservoirs. As a safety measure, we used a pressure switch at the pump outlet, so if one of the valves fails and won't open, this pressure switch opens its contact and consequently turns off the pump. We also created a manual mode, where, through selector switches, we can fill any of the reservoirs, regardless of the floats. What is the function of the solenoid valve? Solenoid valves are one of the most important pieces of equipment used in industrial production systems. They are responsible for controlling the flow of fluids and gases in pneumatic and hydraulic systems. In other words, they are nothing more than controlled electromechanical valves. Their function is, essentially, to open or close the flow of a specific piece of equipment or piping electrically. But how does this happen? The valve consists of two basic components: the body, through which the fluid flows; and the coil, which is responsible for electrically actuating the valve's mechanical part. Thus, a solenoid valve is essentially an electrical valve. They can be used in various industrial sectors, such as refrigeration, automation, hydraulics, and pneumatics, for example. Why use a solenoid valve? Typically, automation processes are the ones that use them most. An ammonia tank that must maintain a certain liquid level, for example. Thus, a solenoid valve is installed at the inlet to open when the ammonia level sensor indicates a sudden change, either high or low. Another good example is the use of solenoid valves in heat exchangers, equipment that heats water with steam and is very common in industry. A temperature sensor is installed at the hot water outlet that communicates directly with a process controller or PLC. The latter sends the electrical signal to activate or deactivate the steam solenoid valve, sending more or less steam according to demand. The two processes mentioned above are industrial; however, these valves can also be used in residential settings, such as for feeding water tanks and reservoirs and in automatic irrigation systems with timers. Thus, all these fluid opening and closing procedures can be automated using just three components: a solenoid valve, a sensor, and a controller. This simple automation allows for greater operational safety and reliability, without relying on human labor to perform a simple task that demands a high level of attention and responsibility. Additionally, this equipment can be used for level control, temperature control, refrigeration control, and various other industrial applications. Types of Solenoid Valves The most common types are divided into the following characteristics: Voltage: 220V, 110V, 24V, and 12V. Size: 1/8", ¼", 3/8", ½", ¾", 1", 1.5", 1.5", and 2". Fluid: water, steam, ammonia, air, and oil. Material: stainless steel and bronze Solenoid Valve Installation Installing a valve is very simple. First, the body is threaded onto the pipe or equipment according to the inlet and outlet arrows. For a flanged solenoid valve, it is installed between the flanges, maintaining the same installation direction. Next, the coil is attached to the yoke at the top of the valve body. The electrical connector is used to connect the wires supplying the valve's power and then attached to the coil. After these three steps, the valve will be installed and functioning properly.
