The splitting of the supercontinent Rodinia, which absorbed CO₂, combined with a weakened sun and massive volcanic eruptions, turned the Earth into a 60-million-year freezer. However, cyanobacteria survived beneath that ice, and volcanoes accumulated CO₂ over tens of millions of years, eventually melting the ice. Then, as oxygen exploded, the slime-like world that had remained unchanged for 3 billion years shattered. The first complex animals were born.
