Levellers Day

After the English Civil War, in May 1649, a faction of the New Model Army rebelled, demanding more equality for common people. Troops loyal to Oliver Cromwell imprisoned the mutineers in the church at Burford and executed three of the leaders in the churchyard. In 1975 the Labour Party held a commemorative address here and speakers like Tony Benn and Michael Foot have continued the tradition every year since. May 2026. 10 minutes.
