Years ago, Balkh was at a time when the madrasahs were still rising and scholars were roaming the streets. The city would wake up with the morning call to prayer and breathe with knowledge. Everyone had a prayer on their tongue and a love in their hearts. At that time, a wise man named Bahaeddin Veled lived in Balkh. The people called him “Sultan al-Arifin”. He was a man famous for his knowledge and who touched people’s hearts with his wisdom. He had a son: Jalaluddin. He was still a little boy, but his eyes looked so bright that they seemed to see beyond words. That night, the streets of Balkh were silent. It was as if the moon had spread a white blanket over the desert. As always, Bahaeddin Veled was busy with dhikr in his room. Little Jalaluddin (Mevlana) had fallen asleep at his father’s feet. The door was gently knocked three times at midnight. Bahaeddin got up. Without saying a word, he opened the door. A man in a black robe and veiled face entered. He neither greeted nor spoke. He simply drew three circles on the ground with his cane and pointed to the third with his finger. Bahā’ al-Dīn nodded and said, “I know…” The man silently went back and disappeared into the darkness. When morning came, Jalal al-Dīn woke up and asked his father: “Who was the man who came at night, father? And why did he leave without speaking?” Bahā’ al-Dīn did not answer. He only looked up at the sky and replied: “It was a reminder. The road is long, but the steps are numbered. There is separation at the third stop.” From that day on, Bahā’ al-Dīn Veled began preparations to emigrate from Balkh. Because he knew that the Mongols were approaching. But this was not just a flight from war. This was a divine sign for Jalal al-Dīn to begin his journey of knowledge and love. Years later, Rumi told this incident to a friend as follows: “The guest who came at night was actually a secret that came from inside us, not from outside.
