He does not think that this theory is the literal truth, as he does not think that any single theory fully captures how the Atoning work of Christ works. Rather, this is a theory that Lewis says is personally helpful. This theory understands Christ's submission, suffering, and death as necessary for God to help us sufficiently repent, which we cannot do on our own due to our sinful nature.
