Why Fallout's Music Just Works

In this video essay, I explore the music of the Fallout series and how its old-timey tunes paint a picture of warmth and nostalgia in a future world devastated by nuclear war. Reading the text on the back of the game box in the 90s, or browsing the Steam description of the games today, when you see words like post-apocalyptic, future, and laser weapons, you wouldn’t expect the soundtrack to be packed with crooners, swing, and mid-century jazz. New players might be puzzled by this strange pairing, but seasoned fans know the music is what makes the world feel coherent, immersive, and alive. So why does it work? Why do these old melodies feel so fitting in a world of nuclear-powered cars, robots, and laser rifles? I share my perspective on why Fallout’s music is perfect for its atomic-age alternate universe. As we wander through the ruins of collapsed skyscrapers, there’s nothing quite like the warm crackle of a familiar voice drifting from our trusty Pip-Boy.
