Many of the well-known melodies are characterised by a great grandeur and a graceful and classic character. This special quality is also the unifying element of Martin Scharnagl’s latest four-movement work VIER WEIHNACHTLICHE FARBEN (Four Christmas Colours). It is based on the atmospheric carols “Leise rieselt der Schnee”, “Zu Bethlehem geboren”, “Es wird scho glei dumpa” and “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht” (Silent Night). The unique fusion of tradition and innovation is one of the Austrian composer’s unmistakable trademarks. For VIER WEIHNACHTLICHE FARBEN, the Tyrolean artist had the creative idea of keeping the motifs (melodies) of his four Christmas pictures unchanged, but immersing them in completely different, fresh colours (harmonies) and presenting them in a larger, more magnificent frame. The familiar melodies are enriched with singing counter-themes and expanded with newly composed interludes and endings. The result is four independent musical paintings of touching beauty. Each of the small works of art can be presented individually, e.g. in the form of an opening piece, interlude or as a resting point at the end. It is also possible to perform this piece as a four-movement concert work.
