Great Lakes, Great Invaders

Grass Carp, an invasive species, are quickly approaching our Great Lakes and pose a threat to our aquatic ecosystems. Learn how scientists are protecting native fish and aquatic habitats and what you can do to help. Are you interested in learning to identify the fish in Ontario's lakes and rivers? Join us for one of our fish identification clinics, hosted at the University of Guelph. Upcoming clinics for the 2025 season include: Introductory workshops: A three-day workshop that will cover the broad array of Ontario fish families and provide an opportunity to develop specialized knowledge of a group of interest A four-day workshop that will cover the same information as the three-day introductory workshop but has an additional day in the field (Marden Lake/Eramosa River) with Jason Barnucz and Robin Gaspardy from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and ROM staff. A presentation on preservation, documentation, photographing and sampling tissues for genetic studies will also be given in the field. Workshops diving deeper into specific topics: A two-day workshop on fish species-at-risk in Ontario A two-day workshop on Great Lakes invasive fish species A three-day workshop on Ontario carps and minnows, including the families: Cyprinidae, Leuciscidae, Tincidae, and Xenocyprididae.
