22 FORGOTTEN Soul Food Meals Black Families Ate To Survive Hard Times

What did Black families eat when there was almost nothing left? Long before soul food became celebrated in restaurants and cookbooks, there was a quieter kind of cooking — the kind that happened on Tuesday nights when the money was gone and seven people still needed to eat. This is the cooking nobody wrote down. The cooking that lived entirely in the hands of Black mothers and grandmothers across the American South and the cities of the Great Migration. In this video, James takes you on a journey through 22 forgotten meals that kept Black families alive during the hardest times — from the pot likker and cornbread of the Deep South, to the Gullah Geechee traditions of the Carolina coast, to the blues country of the Mississippi Delta, and all the way north to the tenement kitchens of Chicago and Detroit. *What you'll discover:* The broth that most people threw away — and why grandmothers drank it like medicine The West African crop that fed the Carolinas for generations How a bag of dried navy beans became Sunday dessert The dish that traveled from the Delta to Chicago and became a cultural institution The Sunday Pot — the tradition that turned a week of leftovers into something nobody could recreate These weren't recipes from a cookbook. They were knowledge passed hand to hand, generation to generation, without a measuring cup in sight. And right now, that knowledge is disappearing. *Drop a comment below:* What's the one meal your grandmother made when things were tight that you've never been able to recreate? Tell us what she called it — because I guarantee someone else's Big Mama made the same thing. If this is your first time here, subscribe and ring the bell. We're building a community of people who remember — and people who want to remember. Forgotten Black Memories — because somebody has to.
