Amid this entire situation, the arrival of the new Commissioner of Police, Anurag Kumar, has raised serious questions about Delhi Police's leadership. The police action has come under intense criticism, and it appears as though officers were given a free hand to use force. There seemed to be no restraint and no regard for basic dignity. What is even more disturbing is the way young women and female students were allegedly treated. Many argue that such treatment should not be inflicted even on convicted criminals. A video is rapidly going viral on social media. However, we will not name any police officer because incorrect identities have previously been circulated online. The viral footage allegedly shows a three-star Inspector-rank Delhi Police officer attempting to push a baton toward the back of a woman standing in the crowd. If the video is authentic and has not been manipulated, it raises extremely serious concerns and warrants an impartial investigation. According to claims circulating online, the young woman was initially standing peacefully. She reportedly stepped forward only after a male protester collapsed following the police action, intending to help lift him. It was at that moment that the alleged incident occurred. The question is: Is this the standard of ethics expected from the police? Is this how a crowd is controlled, or does such conduct only provoke further anger and unrest? If an Inspector-level officer can allegedly behave in this manner in front of thousands of people, it naturally raises concerns about how fearless lower-ranking personnel may have felt while using force. Now the focus shifts to Delhi Police's official response to the viral video. If the footage is misleading or taken out of context, the facts should be presented publicly. If it is genuine, then the public will expect to know what action will be taken against the officer involved. It also remains to be seen how BJP leaders respond to the controversy—whether they condemn the alleged conduct or attempt to justify it.
