DXpeditions and working "Split" (or UP)

DXpeditions and sometimes other DX stations that get a massive pile up of stations calling will commonly work "Split". I attempt to show how this works in the video - specifically with the Yaesu FTdx101. Essentially, since there are so many stations calling the DX station, if they were all on the same frequency, it would be total chaos, and if the DX station were to respond to a caller, the caller might not hear the DX station calling them because other stations might still be calling the DX station and totally clobber their signal. The way to combat this is to "work UP", which means that the DX station will call CQ on a frequency, and listen "UP" between 1 and 2 kilohertz. Sometimes this might be as much as 5 khz depending on the pile up and whether they are working CW or SSB. So for example - the DX station calls CQ on 14.025... If he is working "up", he is likely listening to 14.026 or 14.027 or somewhere in between. You need to understand your radio enough to be able to configure this. So, you would be listening on 14.025 and transmitting on 14.026. I show how this works on the Yaesu FTdx101. All of this means that if the station is calling CQ, and they say "UP" that means they ARE NOT LISTENING ON THE FREQUENCY THEY ARE CALLING ON. This means that your attempts at trying to contact the DXer will be futile and other stations might break in and say "UP", or "he is calling up".
