There isn’t much of a plan yet… but that’s exactly how the best Friday nights begin. The first stop is Pizza Hut. Over a large pepperoni pizza and a pitcher of Coke, everyone starts throwing out ideas. Someone wants to spend the whole night at the arcade trying to finally beat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Someone else insists Batman is too good to miss. Another votes for browsing cassette tapes at Sam Goody before the movie starts. Before long, the plan is set. Pizza. Arcade. Sam Goody. Movies. The arcade is loud, crowded as you and your friends squeeze around the four player Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cabinet, arguing over who gets to be Leonardo before diving into another run through the streets of New York. Before you know it, the pockets full of quarters are gone, and it’s time to head next door. With movie time getting close, you wander into Sam Goody, flipping through rows of cassette tapes and hoping they’ll finally have the new Beastie Boys album in stock. Even if you can’t afford it yet, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming about the day you’ll bring it home. Before long, the marquee lights flicker on, and it’s time for tickets to Batman. If the manager isn’t paying attention… maybe you’ll stick around afterward for The Karate Kid Part III. When the credits roll, nobody is in a hurry to go home. You laugh your way down the sidewalk beneath the glow of neon signs, stopping outside the video store to admire the latest rentals. Right there in the front window in the New Releases is Beetlejuice. Someone suggests making that next Friday night’s adventure, and everyone agrees before climbing back onto their bikes. The night finally winds down at the diner, where you squeeze into a booth under the neon glow and make one order of fries and a few milkshakes last as long as humanly possible. Nobody wants to say it’s time to go home. Not when the city is still buzzing. Not when the summer air is warm. Not when a night like this feels like it could keep going forever. Eventually, the streets grow quiet. You unlock your bikes from the rack, coast back through the quiet streets, and ride home beneath the glow of the streetlights, still laughing about the movie, the arcade, the music, and all the little moments you already know you’ll remember. Because in 1989, on a Friday in Chill City, the night air feels just like it used to.
