Who's This? Dark Souls 1st Time Walkthrough Part 42 - Meeting New NPC's In The Catacombs
Since 2018 I've played Bloodborne, Elden Ring and Sekiro, loving all 3. But it's time to turn the clock back and experience one of the most impactful franchises in modern gaming, Dark Souls! ► Instagram/Twitter @dansg08 ►Playlist: https://bit.ly/Dansg08DS1 ► If you enjoy the content, get early access, special perks & support Dansg08 on Patreon: https://goo.gl/xvvDJD Or become a Member! ► Welcome to this commentary playthrough of Dark Souls 1 Remastered, played on PC. There are very few people who engage in ANY type of gaming who have not heard of "Dark Souls", "Soulslike" or "Soulsborne". The games have become a genre onto themselves and garnered the love and passion of millions of fans around the world. Sure, the roots date back further than Dark Souls 1, but this game as an outsider truly felt like where the ascension of Fromsoft began. They would go on to produce a staggering, almost unprecedented string of modern day classics in a short space of time, including Elden Ring which became a top 5 game of all time for me. I began my Fromsoft journey in 2018 with Bloodborne, a game whose aesthetic and world intrigued me greatly and the notorious difficulty being icing on the cake as someone who enjoys a challenge in most of their gaming experiences. It was an excellent first encounter and made me interested in the future of the developer. That said, I wasn't able to jump into Sekiro for its 2019 release, and didn't go on to play it until 2024. I loved that one even more than Bloodborne: the incredibly tight, responsive and satisfying gameplay combined with the more conventional storytelling and Japanese aesthetic really worked for me. It was clear to me at this point why these guys had so many fans and had earned the trust of gamers with whatever it was that they were going to release. The games had a great central style and DNA, but could go in different directions and continue to keep and spread their appeal. But even before I tried Sekiro, things really elevated for me when I was able to play Elden Ring at launch in 2022. The hype was unlike a lot of what I'd experienced before and the community was salivating over the prospect of an open world Dark Souls style game that had seemingly endless scale and lore. A game that felt like it had an impossible task to live up to the hype, but boy did it succeed. The reviews, the sales and the legacy make it clear that Elden Ring has became the crowning jewel of Fromsoft's legendary run, for now. Sure, others may like their earlier titles more but it's hard to deny the widespread impact of Elden Ring and I for one was completely absorbed, exploring for hours on end and finding that even after 80 hours I wasn't just trying to get to the end, I was still hungry for more. I haven't put as many hours into a game not called FFX since then, and that's saying something. But of course that brings us to Dark Souls. I've loved the other releases but there's no way I couldn't go back and experience one of the founding fathers of the genre. There's a reason Dark Souls is so revered, and there's no doubt the later titles that earned such success owe some of it to the work Fromsoft did on titles like Demon's Souls (which I'll play in the future) and Dark Souls. I've been wanting to try it for years but now is finally the time, I get to experience that Fromsoft goodness on a blind run once again and though I know it will bring with it many moments of silliness, humiliation and embarrassment - I'm going to enjoy it and share it with you in the purest form I can while keeping it flowing. There will be many deaths, moments where I lose track of where to go or can't find the way forward, parts where I miss things in plain sight, or fail in ways you didn't even think were possible. But hopefully you will also see a journey of discovery, of growing into a game and getting increasingly familiar and used to its world. Moments of luck, maybe even a rare moment of skill. Or maybe not.
