The Holy Name of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva 《地藏菩薩聖號》 南無地藏菩薩 Namo di zang pu sa 南無地藏菩薩摩訶薩 Namo di zang pu sa mo he sa 南無大願地藏菩薩 Namo da yuan di zang pu sa mo he sa Simple Explanation of the Holy Name (Chinese Chanting) 「南無」comes from the Sanskrit Namo (नमो), meaning “to take refuge in, to pay homage, to devote oneself.” 「地藏 / di zang」“Kṣitigarbha” (क्षितिगर्भ) means “Treasure of the Earth” or “Womb of the Earth.” It symbolizes the Bodhisattva’s steadfastness, like the great earth that bears and supports, containing boundless virtues, nurturing life, and taking upon itself the weight of suffering. 「菩薩 / pu sa」 in Sanskrit is Bodhisattva (बोधिसत्त्व). Bodhi (बोधि) means “awakening, enlightenment, wisdom.” Sattva (सत्त्व) can mean “sentient being, life, hero, or mind/essence.” It refers both to all living beings and to those courageous enough to pursue the path of practice. Together, Bodhisattva means “awakened being” or “spiritual hero” — one who, though knowing the path to enlightenment, still remains in the world with great compassion, choosing to walk alongside all sentient beings. 「摩訶薩/ mo he sa」“Mahāsattva” (महासत्त्व) means “Great Bodhisattva,” emphasizing vastness of heart and fearless vows of practice. 「大願 / da yuan」The title “Great Vows” echoes the Bodhisattva’s supreme aspiration. On this auspicious day, let us follow the sound of the Holy Name and walk together with the Bodhisattva’s Great Vows. In the original Buddhist scriptures, He is called “Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva” (Sanskrit: Kṣitigarbha क्षितिगर्भ), meaning “Treasure of the Earth.” This name symbolizes His steadfastness and vastness, like the great earth that nurtures all beings, contains immeasurable virtues, and bears the weight of all suffering. He is called a Bodhisattva because, with great compassion and vow, He continues walking the path of saving sentient beings. In the Chinese Buddhist tradition, devotees often refer to Him as “Kṣitigarbha King Bodhisattva” (地藏王菩薩). The title “King” does not appear in the original scriptures. Rather, it arose later as a term of reverence, since He is believed to dwell in the underworld, liberating beings from suffering, like a sovereign guiding the realm of the dead. This honorific highlights His majestic power and authority in hell and the spirit world. For this music, we return to the original name in the scriptures, using “The Holy Name of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva”, to reveal His pure essence as a Bodhisattva—compassionate, steadfast, and unyielding in His vows. Every recitation of the Holy Name is both an inner refuge and an offering of compassion.
