Mit einer Länge von rund 4,6 Kilometern verbindet er die Stadtteile Südfriedhof, Schreventeich, Ravensberg und Wik und verläuft von der Saarbrückenstraße im Süden bis zur Projensdorfer Straße nahe des Holstein-Stadions im Norden. Entlang seines Verlaufs zeigt sich ein Querschnitt durch das urbane Kiel: Im Süden prägen Gewerbeflächen, große Einzelhandelsstandorte und Bildungseinrichtungen das Bild, während weiter nördlich Wohnquartiere, Universitätsgebäude und wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen dominieren. Der heutige Westring entstand erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg durch die Zusammenlegung mehrerer älterer Straßen wie Hohenzollernring, Hohenstaufenring und Weddigenring. In den 1960er-Jahren wurde die Straße schrittweise verlängert und ausgebaut, um eine leistungsfähige Nord-Süd-Verbindung auf dem Westufer zu schaffen. Gemeinsam mit dem Ostring und dem später gebauten Theodor-Heuss-Ring bildet sie einen wichtigen Teil der Kieler Umgehungsstraßen. Besonders prägend sind die zahlreichen bedeutenden Einrichtungen entlang der Straße. Dazu gehören Teile der Christian-Albrechts-Universität, die Universitätskirche, das RBZ Wirtschaft, die Hauptfeuerwache, der Wissenschaftspark sowie der Nordfriedhof. Im nördlichen Abschnitt befindet sich außerdem das Holstein-Stadion, die Heimspielstätte von Holstein Kiel. Für viele Kieler Studierende gehört der Westring zum Alltag, da zahlreiche Universitätsgebäude, Wohnheime und Institute direkt an der Straße liegen. Gleichzeitig ist der Westring eine wichtige Busachse und Fahrradverbindung. Westring is one of the most important traffic corridors on Kiel’s western shore and represents far more than just a major road. Stretching for approximately 4.6 kilometers, it connects the districts of Südfriedhof, Schreventeich, Ravensberg, and Wik, running from Saarbrückenstraße in the south to Projensdorfer Straße near Holstein Stadium in the north. Along its route, the street provides a cross-section of urban Kiel. The southern sections are characterized by commercial areas, large retail facilities, and educational institutions, while further north the surroundings become increasingly shaped by residential neighborhoods, university buildings, and research facilities. The modern Westring was created after World War II through the consolidation of several older streets, including Hohenzollernring, Hohenstaufenring, and Weddigenring. During the 1960s, it was gradually extended and upgraded into a major north-south route on Kiel’s western side. Together with the Ostring and the later-built Theodor-Heuss-Ring, it forms an essential component of Kiel’s urban road network. Numerous important institutions are located along the road, including parts of Kiel University, the University Church, vocational schools, the city’s main fire station, the Science Park, and Nordfriedhof cemetery. Near its northern end lies Holstein Stadium, home of the football club Holstein Kiel. For many students, the Westring is part of daily life because university institutes, lecture halls, and student residences are situated nearby.
