AGE-WELL Webinar: A Standards-Based Approach to Inclusive, Secure, and Scalable Innovation
As Canada’s aging population grows, AgeTech solutions are increasingly used to support older adults in aging safely and independently at home. However, the lack of clear and consistent standards remains a key barrier to adoption, trust, and scalability. This webinar presents findings from a CSA-published research report that examined the current landscape of AgeTech standards and guidelines through a systematic review of academic and grey literature, complemented by expert consultations. Speakers will discuss key gaps and opportunities across four priority areas: inclusive design and accessibility, ethics, privacy and security, integration and interoperability, and data governance. The session will conclude with evidence-informed recommendations and a strategic discussion on how standards can support innovation, implementation, and real-world impact in the AgeTech ecosystem. By attending this webinar, you will: • Understand the current landscape of AgeTech standards and guidelines relevant to aging in place, based on evidence from academic literature, grey literature, and expert consultation • Identify key gaps and challenges in existing standards related to inclusive design, ethics and privacy, interoperability, and data governance. • Explore evidence-informed recommendations for future standards development that can better support older adults, caregivers, innovators, and health systems Speakers: Dr. Shahabeddin Abhari is a researcher in digital health, health informatics, and AgeTech. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Courtney Genge is a health services and policy researcher with a strong focus on supporting older adults. She is currently a Program Advisor with the Aging in Place Challenge Program at the National Research Council of Canada. Gaya Bin Noon is a PhD candidate in Public Health Sciences and the Lab Manager of the Ubiquitous Health Technology Lab at the University of Waterloo.
