Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (NAOMI)
Released in arcades for the NAOMI system (Sega Dreamcast) in 2000 by Capcom, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2-New Age Of Heroes is a 2D fighting game, the 4th entry in Capcom's iconic Vs. series and sequel to Marvel Vs. Capcom. This entry brings iconic Capcom personalities and legendary Marvel Comics heroes & villains together for a second time. Not only was this game a massive expansion of the prior game, with numerous new mechanics introduced on top of being the first 3 vs. 3 fighting game with being able to freely tag at any time, but it also had what is still perhaps the biggest fighting game roster to date (or one of them)-half of the characters were locked at first so initially it was just a robust 28 (the others were released by players putting a lot of coins in, which didn't take very long for this game, or by operators entering cheat codes in Test Mode) but once you had them all you could play with a whopping 56 characters. FIFTY-SIX!!! Between that and the 3 assist styles available for each fighter, the game provided practically infinite replay value and remained incredibly popular and profitable for several years. In this video I play through with what was my #1 team in both vs. CPU and other players-Iron Man (Projectile support), Cable (Projectile support) & Captain Commando (Anti-Air support, which for him was OP to the point of almost broken). My score was on the low side of average for me but in my defense it's been a good 15 years since I played and I botched my strategy against Abyss, the final boss...but I still felt good about it! Although any time I scored below 2 billion points for an entire uninterrupted game with this trio it was a disappointment. There were both Japan and Export versions of the game. The Japan version reportedly had cross-compatibility with the Dreamcast and connecting a VMU (Virtual Memory Unit) supposedly unlocked at least 2 hidden characters that otherwise were unavailable, sadly this was removed from the export versions that made it to the US. The game was quickly released for the Dreamcast just weeks after it's arcade debut, then it hit the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2002 and became very rare & sought-after because it quickly became almost impossible to find. I was lucky to get a used copy for Xbox years later when I did, if you can find one today or still have it, you've probably got quite the sought-after collector's item! It was re-released in 2009 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 via their online services, While the graphics no longer stand the test of time, and given they were SD and 16-bit quality look bad today on 4K displays, the gameplay is still very deep and fun and I will still argue it remains perhaps the greatest fighting game ever. And it's still far and away the best of the whole Vs. Series. This Is Marvel Vs. Capcom 2! In June 2024 Capcom announced the game would be re-released for PC, PlayStation 4/5 & Nintendo Switch in late 2024 as part of a new compilation featuring all 4 Vs. Series games and the arcade version of "The Punisher", a Final Fight-style beat-em-up.
