On July 20, 2023, during Stage 18 of the Tour de France between Moûtiers and Bourg-en-Bresse, the sprinters seemed destined for another showdown after a relatively calm day on the roads of the Ain region. But as the kilometers ticked by, the day's three escapees began to believe in the impossible against sprint teams unable to fully regain control of the race, especially after a fourth rider joined them at the front. Part of the breakaway, Kasper Asgreen chose to attack from kilometer zero to challenge the peloton. The Soudal Quick-Step rider resisted the sprinters' charge in a breathtaking finale, holding on by only a few meters at the finish line. Behind him, Pascal Eenkhoorn and Jonas Abrahamsen did everything they could to support the daring move, while the peloton narrowly failed in its pursuit.
