The Six 'Talking Sculptures' of Rome: The Congregation of Wits
Explore the city of Rome through its Six Talking Sculptures! (Statue Parlanti). These six ‘talking’ sculptures, also known as The Congregation of Wits, have acted as a powerful means for the people of Rome to criticize and satirize the papal government and other authorities since the 16th century. People still speak through them today! The sculptures’ names are: Pasquino, Marforio, Madama Lucrezia, Abbot Luigi, Il Facchino, and Il Babuino. They are dotted all over Rome! Menelaus was the King of the Greeks. In the battle of the Greeks against the Trojans, Achilles one day refused to fight. Consequently, Patroclus, unbeknownst to Achilles, disguised himself in Achilles’s armor and led his soldiers into battle. Patroclus is then killed by Hector, the prince of Troy, who believed him to be Achilles. Distraught at the death of his friend, Achilles is driven to seek vengeance.
