https://www.footankle.com/children-fe... Heel pain is the most common area of the foot to hurt in children and in this video pediatric foot specialist Dr. Larry Huppin will discuss the most common causes of heel pain in children and explain the most effective treatments, including self-treatment options. The most common cause of heel pain in kids is Sever’s disease – also known as calcaneal apophysitis. Calcaneus is a name for the heel bone and the apophysis of a bone is the growth plate of that bone. So calcaneal apophysitis is simply an inflammation of the growth plate of the heel bone. It is very common in kids who play sports such as soccer, lacrosse and ultimate. We also see it a lot in baseball and basketball players. Finally, it is also common in kids who are overweight. When treating Sever’s disease our first goal is to reduce tension and pressure on the heel bone. We do this with the use of quality arch supports or orthotics along with proper shoes. In some cases we need to let the foot rest for a couple weeks in a walking boot. We will also use anti-inflammatory measures including icing to treat Sever’s disease.
