Twitter @juangangel Gloxinia is a genus of three species of herbaceous plants belonging to the Gesneriaceae family. It is native to the Americas. Description They are small, perennial herbaceous plants with scaly rhizomes (absent in G. xanthophylla). The stem is erect. The leaves are opposite, rarely ternate, with 5-9 (-12) pairs of veins. The stem and leaves are pubescent. They bear solitary flowers that emerge from the axils of opposite or alternate bracts, forming a terminal raceme-shaped inflorescence. The sepals are free. The corolla is generally tubular to campanulate, white, pink, purple, or brown. The fruit is a dry, dehiscent, ovoid to elliptical capsule with numerous seeds. Distribution and Habitat Distributed throughout South America, mainly in the Andes (but G. perennis is widely cultivated and has naturalized outside the Andes), G. erinoides extends to Central America (Costa Rica). They grow in small to large colonies on rocks, along riverbanks, or in shady, humid places in the forest; the plants are dormant during the winter, when they are reduced to underground rhizomes. Etymology The genus was named after Benjamin Peter Gloxin (1765–1795), a physician and botanist from Alsace. Taxonomy Wiehler's (1976) classification (based primarily on chromosome number and hybridization experiments) proved to be unnatural. Molecular evidence has been presented indicating that Gloxinia should be restricted to three species: G. perennis, G. erinoides (formerly placed in the monotypic genus Koellikeria), and G. xanthophylla (formerly placed in the monotypic genus Anodiscus) (Roalson et al. 2005a, b, Boggan 2006). A characteristic feature of all three species is the terminal, open, raceme inflorescence, otherwise rare (Smithiantha). G. perennis and G. erinoides have fragrant flowers. G. perennis attracts male euglossine bees by producing scents (secreted by osmophores) rather than nectar. It was one of the first plants (and the first member of the Gesneriaceae) to be observed pollinated by male euglossine bees collecting scent (Vogel 1966).
