India - Una superpotencia emergente - Democracia, desarrollo, desplazamiento | DW Documental
India, the world's largest democracy, turns 75. With his nonviolent resistance, Mahatma Gandhi paved the way for independence. He aspired to a pluralistic, secular, and egalitarian state. What remains of his ideals? To what extent has India strayed from the ideals of equality and nonviolence of Mahatma Gandhi and the other founding fathers? What is the current state of democracy, human rights, and social justice, and where is India headed? These questions are the starting point of a narrative that focuses on people committed to Gandhi's ideals today, precisely because reality is often the opposite of these ideals. Their stories come together to form a mosaic that brings us closer to India in all its facets. A country caught between poverty and wealth: on the one hand, shaken by Hindu nationalism, violence against women and minorities, and overwhelmed by enormous environmental problems. On the other hand, India harbors great global political ambitions and is in the midst of the space race. A country where the caste system, outlawed by the Constitution, continues to create exclusion. A country where children work in brick factories and cannot attend school. A country where indigenous people are expelled from their lands due to the greed of corporations. But at the same time, India is a country full of spirituality, with a rich cultural heritage that, despite everything, is producing innovative, critical, and creative minds and ideas. This two-part documentary reveals these two worlds through personal stories. The narrative of contemporary India repeatedly traces back to the country's history, to the foundations of what is now the world's largest democracy. One expert and connoisseur of Indian history, in particular, knows how to weave together the threads of the past and present: Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, assassinated in 1948, recounts, in a personal and anecdotal way, the story of his grandfather, with whom he lived for several years as a child. Arun Gandhi is well acquainted with his grandfather's ideas and has captured them in an acclaimed book ("The Gift of Anger: And Other Lessons from My Grandfather Mahatma Gandhi"). He draws parallels with the country's recent history and current events. How do the defenders of that longed-for India view their country's development? Complementing Arun Gandhi, Indian scientist and globalization critic Vandana Shiva puts her finger on the sore spot: sometimes there is a profound chasm between Gandhi's ideals and current reality. Her position is clear: civil disobedience remains necessary today.
