In Manhattan’s Chinatown, Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) unfolded in a cascade of red, gold, and celebration. Along Mott Street, families and friends arrived in fresh red garments — symbols of renewal and fortune — as lion dancers moved from storefront to storefront. With each rhythmic bow and leap, they chased away lingering misfortune and offered blessings for prosperity. Spectators reached forward to touch the lion’s head, slipping red envelopes into its mouth in exchange for luck in the year ahead. The streets themselves had transformed into a festival ground — confetti blanketing the pavement, poppers dispensing confetti through the air, percussion echoing the streets. Children darted through the streets with silly string, clutching silk lion puppets, and lighting bright smoking sparklers.
