JART Gallery offers a unique and insightful lecture on the influence of icon painting on the work of prominent Russian artists of the early 20th century: Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Marc Chagall, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, and Pavel Filonov. Dmitry Gutov, drawing on JART's unique exhibition "Five Centuries of Russian Icons from the 16th to the 20th Centuries: Traditions and Innovations," will present a narrative filled with visual examples, hidden analogies, and correlations. We opened our new exhibition project on ancient Russian icon painting in the fall of 2017. During this period, the museum and gallery community in Russia and abroad was focusing on rethinking an important historical event – ​​the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1917. In this context, our project is perceived as unusual and, at first glance, strange. It is strange if you do not know that religious worldview and the art of icon painting influenced the formation of the concepts of the work of outstanding Russian artists of this period, some of whom even “made a revolution” in their field.
