First Reading A reading from the Book of Jeremiah 3:14-17 “Return, faithless children,” declares the Lord, “for I am your Lord. I will gather you, one from each town and two from each tribe, and I will bring you to Zion. I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding. You will increase in number and multiply in the land. In those days,” declares the Lord, “the ark of the covenant of the Lord will no longer be remembered or mentioned; it will not be missed, nor will another be made. At that time Jerusalem will be called the throne of the Lord.” All nations will gather in Jerusalem, to the name of the Lord, who is in Jerusalem, and they will no longer follow their stubborn and perverse hearts. Today’s Psalm Jeremiah 31:10, 11-12ab, 13 R/. The Lord will keep us like a shepherd keeps his flock. Hear, O nations, the word of the Lord, proclaim it in the distant coastlands: “He who scattered Israel will gather him, will keep him like a shepherd keeps his flock.” R/. “For the Lord has redeemed Jacob, ran him out of the hand of one stronger than he.” They shall come with shouts of joy to the height of Zion, they shall stream to the bounty of the Lord. R/. Then the young women shall rejoice in the dance, the young men and the old shall be glad; I will turn their mourning into joy, I will give them gladness and comfort for their sorrow. R/. Gospel of the day A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 13:18-23 At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The seed sown on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution arises because of the word, they quickly fall away. The seed sown among thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. But the seed sown on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
